The Film
Before Us: A Story From Thailand centers on an elderly woman in Bangkok as she reflects on her life.
She was born into a Thai-Chinese family and left school at a young age to work, after her father became ill. Much of her life was shaped by hardship—loss, responsibility, and long periods of uncertainty—but also by the choices she made in response to those conditions.
Through conversation, she shares her experiences in her own words, alongside reflections on how she has come to understand life over time.
The Process
This film was built through time spent with her, rather than a fixed plan going in.
The interview became a way of letting her guide the direction of the story, while the visual side of the film was shaped by the environments connected to her life. The intention was not to recreate or dramatize anything, but to stay close to what was already there and translate it into something that could be experienced visually.
At its core, this project is about making space for a life to be understood.
